Does Money Grow on Trees?

May 6th, 2009

Does money grow on trees? That was the question that was posted to me by my son when we were having a family conversation about “money doesn’t grow on trees”. He challenged me by saying that I was wrong and because paper money notes are made of paper, trees will have to be cut down in order to produce paper and then into money thus the answer to “does money grow on trees” should be yes!

Anyway, I need further check and found that the US dollar is actually made of 75% cotton and 25% linen rather than paper and you can catch a short video here on how money is made at how stuff works. I have not done other checks on other countries currency and how they are made but back to the question on “does money grow on trees”.

After I revealed the information to my family, again I was told that money does grow on tree! Cotton comes from a cotton tree right? Well, I guess there are different type of cotton plants and trees and since I am not sure where the cotton comes from in that goes into making the money, can I conclude that we do actually grow money in some ways but not on trees?
