Saturday, January 3, 2009 15:32One of the Chinese New Year traditions in Singapore is to bring along mandarin oranges when you are visiting family members and friends during the Chinese New year visiting.
Chinese New Year is the most important of the traditional Chinese holidays. Called the Lunar New Year by some, the festival traditionally begins on the first day of the first lunar month in the Chinese calendar and ends on the 15th
Mandarin oranges are a must have during this period. They have an auspicious name and a must have when visiting family or friends during the 15 days of Chinese New Year celebration. By handing over two mandarin oranges to the Chinese host of the house that you visit, you are presenting the host with a pair of “gold” offering. The host will return a pair of “gold” offering in return.
Mandarin oranges can also be found displayed in abundance in houses of Chinese during this period
How about a slight change to the Chinese New Year tradition by handing over mandarin oranges with a difference this year? These oranges are made of bead and will definitely last longer than normal mandarin oranges.
